• Resumen

  Las relaciones entre católicos y protestantes se incrementaron progresivamente desde comienzos del siglo XIX aunque en el marco de un régimen político y religioso caracterizado formalmente por la unanimidad. Sin embargo, la independencia creó un nuevo escenario en el cual las diferencias religiosas, no sólo entre cristianos de distintos cultos sino también ente católicos, se hicieron más visibles. El modo en que esas diferencias fueron aceptadas -o no- y administradas, y la relación entre pertenencia religiosa y nacionalidad permiten analizar el horizonte político y cultural disponible para la tolerancia religiosa y la libertad de cultos -cuya aprobación en Buenos Aires creó nuevos desafíos por ejemplo en materia de matrimonios mixtos.

• Abstract

  Since the beginning of the nineteenth-century, the relationship between Catholics and Protestants tended to be more fluent and intense, even in the context of a political and religious system formally characterized by unanimity. However, the Independence created a new scene in which the religious differences, both between Catholics and Protestants and among Catholics, turned more notorious. The way those divergent views were managed and accepted, the links between religious affiliation and nationality, as well as the emergence of a political and cultural environment favorable to tolerance and religious liberty, are analyzed in this essay.
